Adèle Mennerat et Marcel Lambrechts, se sont intéressés aux mésanges bleues et ont étudié comment les femelles disposent des petits fragments de plantes aromatiques dans leurs nids. En Corse, où ces oiseaux sont relativement faciles à observer, les scientifiques ont identifié les espèces végétales, quinze au total, les plus fréquentes étant la lavande, l’immortelle, l’achillée, la menthe et la pulicaire. Une belle pharmacie naturelle! Et, en 2005, ils sont parvenus à démontrer que la présence de ces plantes médicinales entraînait une diminution du nombre d’espèces de bactéries sur la peau des poussins, améliorant leur croissance et leurs chances de survie. Ils ont également constaté des comportements individuels différenciés parmi les mésanges bleues : chaque oiseau n’utilise en effet que quelques espèces de plantes, et il sélectionne les mêmes, années après années : « La femelle compose son propre bouquet ».
